Florida Rep. Val B. Demings speaks Wednesday in the Capitol’s Statuary Hall during an unveiling ceremony for a statue honoring civil rights pioneer Mary McLeod Bethune. Statues of Rosa Parks and Norman Borlaug flank the statue of Bethune, the first Black woman in the National Statuary Hall collection. Her statue replaces one of Confederate Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith, which was removed in September. Read the related story.
