As D.C. Celebrates Emancipation Day, Holmes Norton Pushes For Statehood

Kicking off a multi-day celebration of the 1862 abolition of slavery in Washington, D.C., Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton made a push for district statehood on the House floor late last week. On Monday, Emancipation Day, people gathered at the Lincoln statue near the Capitol Hill neighborhood to celebrate the signing of the bill that made emancipation possible for 3,100 D.C. slaves.
