Former Texas Republican Rep. Steve Stockman was jailed Thursday on charges of violating federal election law during his last term in office.

Stockman was brought into court shackled and handcuffed, KPRC-TV in Houston reported and bail was set at $25,000. A conviction could send Stockman to federal prison.

According to a complaint, Stockman set up a non-profit called Life Without Limits in 2011 that received a single $350,000 donation. Stockman is accused of funneling that money back to himself through payments to employees.

When Stockman was told he would need to have an attorney by 2 p.m Friday, he said “I’ll have to hustle with that.”

Smith responded “Yeah, you will. These are serious charges.”

Stockman served in the House for two stints, first from 1995 to 1997 and then from 2013 to 2015. He left the House after a failed primary challenge against Sen. John Cornyn in 2014.
