Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-La., apologized for making a sexually inappropriate joke about President Donald Trump’s adviser Kellyanne Conway.

At last week’s Washington Press Club Foundation congressional dinner, Richmond made remarks about a photo showing Conway on her knees on a couch in the Oval Office.

Richmond said Conway “looked kind of familiar there in that position there.” Richmond initially deflected criticism, saying his comment wasn’t sexual.

But Richmond, who is head of the Congressional Black Caucus, apologized Sunday in a statement, WWL reported.

“After a discussion with people I know and trust I understand the way my remarks have been received by many,” Richmond said. “I have consistently been a champion for women and women’s issues, and because of that the last thing I would want to ever do is utter words that would hurt or demean them. I apologize to Kellyanne Conway and everyone who has found my comments to be offensive.”

Richmond was criticized by Louisiana Republican women and by Chelsea Clinton, which Conway thanked her for.
