Rep. Tom Reed, R-N.Y., surprised people staging a sit-in at a district office when he dropped by Thursday after a meeting with President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence in Washington.

Six people from Ithaca Catholic Workers began the sit-in on Tuesday to highlight that Reed not holding a town hall since May 2, 2016. Reed arrived around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Ithaca Common Council member Duscon Nguyen, who had been urging Reed to hold a town hall declared victory on Twitter.

Reed had called the protesters “extremists” in a Wednesday interview on “Fox & Friends,” but Nguyen described the two-hour discussion as “cordial.” Other topics discussed were the Dakota Access Pipeline and the Affordable Care Act, as well as his relationship with the district.

In an emailed statement from earlier in the week, Reed said he planned on holding town halls in all 11 counties he represents this year and that he has held more than 200 town halls since his election.
