Nevada Democrats Want McCarran Statue Removed From Capitol
Harry Reid wanted his name removed from Las Vegas airport
Three Nevada Democratic House members want the statue of former Nevada Sen. Patrick McCarran’s removed from the Capitol’s Statuary Hall.
Reps. Dina Titus, Ruben Kihuen and Jacky Rosen sent a letter to Nevada’s Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval criticizing McCarran’s legacy of xenophobia and antisemitism, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.
“It is time to retire the McCarran statue to Nevada and choose a better suited individual to represent us in National Statuary Hall,” the Nevada members wrote.
The letter was also addressed to Nevada’s state Senate majority leader and the state House speaker-designate.
McCarran, a Democrat, served in the Senate from 1933 until his death in 1954.
McCarran’s legacy was a fraught topic for former Sen. Harry Reid, who also wanted McCarran’s name removed from Las Vegas’ international airport. Some have advocated for replacing McCarran’s with Reid’s.
