News outlets around the world reacted to the election of Donald Trump as president with a mix of shock and wit.

While world leaders congratulated the new leader of the free world, news organizations were a little more candid in their assessment of the U.S. election.

Global markets dropped in uncertainty to a Trump presidency. While the New York Stock Exchange has not yet opened, futures dropped more than 300 points, and the Mexican Peso dropped to an all-time low against the dollar. 

In Germany, Berlin’s Der Tagesspiegel’s top headline translated to “The Revenge of White Men.”

Hamburger Morgenpost’s headline called Trump a “Horror-Clown.”

 

Haaretz, Israel’s oldest newspaper and a left-wing outlet, led with a story from American-born Israeli columnist Bradley Burston asking how to talk ‘to his children about Trump. Another story pointed to the link between Trump, Republican megadonor Sheldon Adelson and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister with longstanding ties to American politicians on the Republican side, congratulated Trump.

 

 

British Prime Minister Theresa May congratulated Trump on his win, stressing the importance of the U.S.-U.K. relationship.

The Times of India, an Indian-English daily newspaper based in Mumbai, referred to Trump’s comments implying sexual assault in a tweet.
