A Vermont Republican filed a complaint Tuesday saying a candidate for state Senate in the Green Mountain State violated campaign finance laws after receiving cash from supporters of the state’s independent Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Sanders sent out an appeal to his entire email list asking for donations to support state Rep. Chris Pearson of the Vermont Progressive Party, which led to Pearson receiving $80,000 in donations.

But Brady Toensing, the vice chairman of the Vermont Republican Party, wrote in a letter to the state attorney general that Sanders’ fundraising list is worth more than $5 million and that using it amounts to a political contribution. The state caps state Senate contributions at $1,500. 

Pearson previously worked for Sanders when he was a congressman.
