More voters now prefer that Democrats control Congress than before the two parties’ conventions, a new poll shows.   

The NBC/Wall Street Journal poll , conducted from July 31 to August 3, showed 47 percent of voters preferred Democrats controlling Congress compared to 43 percent of voters who preferred Republican control. In June, the same poll was tied at 46 percent.  

Democrats had concluded their convention three days before the start of the survey and the Republicans had held theirs the week before.  

NBC and the Wall Street Journal also polled voters about their presidential  preferences during that time and found that Democrats Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine opened a lead coming out of their convention, consistent with a number of post-convention polls.  

47 percent of voters supported Hillary Clinton and Sen. Tim Kaine compared to 38 percent for Republicans Donald Trump and Gov. Mike Pence. In June, Clinton led by a 5-point margin, 46 percent to 41 percent.  

The survey of 800 registered voters has a margin of error of 3.46 percent.
