The commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, Gen. John F. Campbell, said Monday the airstrikes in Kunduz were requested by Afghan forces under attack by the Taliban. “This is different from initial reports, which indicated that U.S. forces were threatened and that the air strike was called on their behalf,” Campbell said. Campbell has ordered an investigation of the incident that resulted in the deaths of at least 19 civilians at a Doctors Without Borders hospital.
