State Department Defends Classifying Some Clinton Emails

After publicly releasing more than 7,000 of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s private emails in compliance with a FOIA request, State Department Deputy Spokesperson Mark C. Toner defended the decision to retroactively classify 125 emails. “We look at these, we redact where necessary in light of the fact that they’re going to be publicly released,” Toner said. “What we’ve said all along is we have not found anything that was marked classified at the time that it was sent.”
